The words “curtains” and “drapes” are often used interchangeably, but they are actually quite different. Both were made to cover windows, but for different reasons.
Curtains are most often used as window coverings and are usually made of very light or sheer fabrics, but not always. Most curtains and casual and are usually the length of the window, although sometimes can be floor-length. Curtains are used because they can open and close when needed to fully see out and into the window. Because curtains are most often made with thin, light fabrics, they don’t block sunlight very well.
Draperies are usually made from heavier fabrics and are most times lined. Draperies are almost always floor length and tend to be more formal. Most draperies are made for decorative purposes and therefore sit in place, without the option to open and close. Other draperies can be on a system or even motorized to open and close. Since draperies tend to be thicker in fabric, they are more commonly used to block out sunlight and heat, as opposed to curtains. Draperies are often used in rooms where guests might be entertained such as a living or dining area.
Many times interior decorators will use a light, sheer curtain on the window that can be opened and closed and add draperies to the window frame for a more decorative look with the ability to open and close for sun exposure. Using both together accomplishes an aesthetic and functional window treatment. Ultimately, most homes can benefit from the use of both draperies and curtains together or separately, depending on your want and need for window coverings, but keep in mind; the shading “lingo” is actually quite different.
